The Library

Beaver Island District Library is located close to the school on Donegal Bay Road, a short distance from the ferry dock. Click here for a map to the Beaver Island District Library.

Mission Statement

The goals of the Beaver Island District Library are to provide access to printed and other materials and resources; to give guidance in their use; to address cultural, informational, educational, and recreational needs of the entire community; and to encourage an enjoyment of reading. We are commited to maintaining an open-minded attitude toward new methods and improvements in library service and to review periodically the goals of the Beaver Island District Library. The library will strive to meet the standards set by the Library of Michigan and the American Library Association for all of its material and services.

Collection

Adult, young people, and picture books; reference & circulating magazines. Some local newspapers. Videos.

Special Collections

Beaver Island Collection (ref. & circ.); Irish Collection; Michigan Collection (ref. & circ.); Great Lakes Collection; Local Monthly Newspaper since 1955.

Programming

Story Hour in July and August on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30.

Library Card

Only a library number is issued under the following stipulations:
  1. Applicant must show ID (preferably driver's license) and fill out an application for a library number.
  2. The applicant must be a Michigan resident or must own property in Michigan.
  3. An adult signature (guardian) is required for minors.
  4. For all others, a family number will be issued for one calendar year for a payment of $15.00.
  5. MichiCards will be issued to legal residents of Beaver Island who also have BIDL number.

Loan Policies

Collection materials (except reference material) can be interloaned through your local library. Materials are checked out to holders of a library number. We do not interloan recorded books or videos.

Fines/Fees

No fines charged. Yearly fee for out-of-Michigan residents who do not own property in Michigan. No fees for videos.
